How to Tell If an Autograph is Authentic

Unless you have personally witnessed an item signed or have video proof of it being signed, authenticity will almost always be questionable.  I know it sounds counter-intuitive and negative, but the best way to approach an autograph's authenticity is to assume that it's NOT authentic and then try to prove otherwise.  Too many people WANT the autograph to be authentic, exercise confirmation bias and refuse to look at tell-tale signs that it is not. 


Purchasing Autographs.  BUYER BEWARE!  A Certificate of Authenticity (C.O.A.) has become more and more meaningless over the years, since people who aren't affiliated with any organization are simply creating them on their own.  There are literally thousands of forged autographs on the market that come with "Certificates of Authenticity".  And when the price is ideal, usually you should pay attention to the old adage that "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is not".  So how do you go about verifying an autograph's authenticity?  Here are some good starting points:
