Music by Adeva was a staple when going to The Box on Thursday nights in the late 80’s /early 90’s on Divisadero in San Francisco. “Respect” and “Warning” were big house/R&B hits, but they weren’t really my groove. But when the DJ played the remixed version of “Treat Me Right, I was THERE for it!
She had a #1 Billboard Dance hit with “It Should ’ve Been Me” and I really love the song itself, but as a serious Motown fan, I was always subconsciously hearing the Kim Weston, Yvonne Fair and Gladys Knight versions in the back of my head. Whereas I didn’t compare Adeva’s version of “Respect” to Aretha’s at all. Go figure. Anyway, her unique and strong vocals made me an interested fan.
Thinking back to this era and type of music, along with the baggy-pants boy-dancers doing the MC Hammer/New Kids on the Block moves, bring back a lot of memories. A shout out to "the one that got away", Robert W. He's got Adeva on his playlist, too and we both love this type of jam. Love u, Pie!
The reason I have so many Adeva records in my collection is not only because I’m a fan of dance/house/R&B, but mostly because this androgynous vocally talented woman released some GREAT COVERS on her 12” singles. I’m just a sucker for imagery. The cheekbones, the high-fade flattop, the sly eyes, the art direction, or simple photography with great lighting. Like a beautiful autograph, I consider beautiful vinyl covers to be works of art. And Adeva’s got ‘em!
