“And you should see cherry’s do flips, oh yeah.
When they’re picked to be the taste on his lips, oh yeah.
And I know how happy his clothes must be.
Cuz that’s how I feel when he’s close to me!”
Imagine doing a bench press and this starts playing through your earbuds. Well, it does for me, on occasion, and it makes me laugh as I look at the gym bros around me.
“Walkin’ Miracle” by The Essex became part of my girl group vinyl collection initially by way of a TV commercial. When I kept seeing commercials for “Super Girls” a 4-LP collection of all girl group songs available “only through special order”, I sent a check and got the “Super Girls” collection.
“Easier Said Than Done” by The Essex was in this collection. It was their first single and a Billboard #1 Record (#11 R&B) out of the gate. Because of that song alone, I dug deeper over the years and became very interested in this all-Marine group, featuring Anita Humes (yes, also a Marine) on lead vocals. The Essex had only 3 charted hits and a 4-year recording career, but for all intents and purposes, this is the girl group “sound” that I love.
“The Best of the Essex featuring Anita Humes” is a good addition to your collection, and there is a rare foreign picture sleeve of Anita Humes that is collectible also. When I started sleuthing to find her address for an autograph request, I was saddened to read that she died at age 69 in 2010.
