"Mark of the Vampire" (1935). I've never seen it. HA!

The reason I put this together was basically to build around my Carroll Borland autograph. Like so many others I am captivated by the image of Carroll Borland as Luna, one of the first female creatures of the night.  But other than the image, I know nothing about her or the movie. I'll research/see the movie and get back to you.

I do happen to know a little bit about Elizabeth Allan, because I am friends with a 85 year old priest who used to be very close with her. He would share these stories about her movies or personal interactions with her and I was like "I have no idea who you are talking about" (not out loud, of course).  I would look through his autographs of her, many of them quite beautiful and in period costumes for her movie roles. When I bought a collection that included an autographed page of hers, I finally looked up her credits. I said to myself, "Oh I can match this up with Carroll Borland since they were in "Mark of the Vampire" together. But I still haven't seen any of Elizabeth's movies. I should probably ask Father John which film(s) he recommends. I'm sure he will fill me in with great gusto...

Looking at the film's credits, I saw that Jean Hersholt was also in "Mark of the Vampire". And I remember his name in a collection of TLS (typed letters signed) that I had bought.  Now this is a guy who I hear every year at the Academy Awards, that the Jean Hersholt Award goes to... and I never really understood what that was about or who Jean Hersholt was.

So just today I learned that he helped to create the Motion Picture Relief Fund - which in turn funds the Motion Picture Country House and Hospital.  I had written to so many celebrities who had retired there, in Woodland Hills!  The Jean Hersholt award is given to those whose humanitarian efforts (such as his) "have brought credit to the industry".  Where would I be without Wikipedia?  BOOKS.  That's where.  Film Encyclopedias and Who's Who would have told me his film credits.  Oh ... the Grandpa in "Heidi".  I know him!

Ok I'm off to watch "Mark of the Vampire" now.  Tod Browning directed?  What?  Why am I always so late to know the nuggets...
