Not being much of a ballet fan (ok, not a fan at all) I really don’t know a lot about Vera Zorina. Just that she was married to George Balanchine (founder of the NYC Ballet), was apparently a great dancer, had a few movie roles and photographed quite beautifully.
Looking up her credits right now, I must admit that I’m a bit curious to see “I Was an Adventuress” from 1940 because she plays a phony countess across from two of my faves – Peter Lorre and Erich Von Stroheim. On my watch list it goes. I’ll get to that when I’m 90ish. Here’s the trailer though – part intriguing, part glam, part WTF, part ballet (blech)
As for Dennis King, he is paired here with Vera because together they made the Broadway play “I Married an Angel” a big hit in 1938, with over 300 performances at the Shubert Theatre. I also like the poster artwork for his 1930 movie “The Vagabond King”. I’m always a sucker for vintage film artwork!
I randomly searched my record collection, and I have Johnny Mathis singing the Broadway (Rodgers and Hart) theme song from “I Married an Angel”. My collection in Hoardington Castle just constantly weaves and loops into itself.
