Sometimes it’s difficult to have even ONE individual artist sign a group album, but I’ve hit the motherlode quite a few times with albums signed by all (or multiple) members of musical groups. For many of these autographs, I have much longer and more detailed backstories, but for now here are some quick blurbs and some of my fave clips by them.
BOYS CLUB – Yet another thrift store find for a couple of bucks signed by 80’s duo Boys Club. Of note: (1) They are a one-album, one-hit wonder (2) One of the members is Eugene Wolfgramm from The Jets – who used the name Gene Hunt during this time period – the autograph is interesting since it seems like a combo of the two names and lack of commitment to a last name (3) Their one hit “I Remember Holding You” reached #8 on the Hot 100 and it sounds EXACTLY like a George Michael song. See and listen for yourself!
BROTHERS JOHNSON – A great thrift store find for $1.50 of Lous and George, The Brothers Johnson, signed LP “Winners”. They sing one of my favorite R&B songs from the 70’s “Strawberry Letter 23”. From the tinkling intro chords and opening lyrics of “Hello my love, I heard a kiss from you”, you’re hooked! My friend and computer guru extraordinaire, Mike N. laments that we don't have "good funk music" like this any more - he's right.
CAMEO – I’ve seen Larry Blackmon and Cameo in concert, and it was … shall we say, hectic? I have no idea why Larry kept leaving the stage every 15 minutes or so. (Or maybe I do have an idea, but who knows?) The band was tight, the song set was ok, but there was something off about the whole concert. Lori P. and I were giving each other side-eye, under-the-table knee grabs and WTF giggles quite a bi at their 2013 show at Yoshi's in San Francisco. tAnyway: the group autograph. I bought a collection of music press kits and photos for ten cents each and found out that this Chocolate City folder was signed by the members of Cameo at the time of their “Cardiac Arrest” LP (but doesn’t include Blackmon). I know people love “Candy” … Strawberry, raspberry, all them good flavors! But my absolute favorite Cameo song – plus Vanity is featured on the cover of the LP - is this:
CON FUNK SHUN – Talk about a thrift store find! A $2.99 record at Goodwill signed by SEVEN members of Con Funk Shun (Felton Pilate, Danny Thomas, Louis McCall, Cedric Martin, Karl Fuller, Paul Maceo Harrell and Michael Cooper) - Mike N. - this one's for you. I betcha love the remix!
DAVE AND SUGAR – Sometimes, I will just find a record of somebody and then dive deep into a rabbit-hole of their discography. Such is the case with Dave & Sugar. I came across the Greatest Hits album first, and bought it on a lark, since I had never heard of the. It was catchy country and I needed to know about this guy and his two “Sugars”. Turns out that Dave Rowland had quite a few different “Sugars” in his line-up as I found out from buying more of his albums. One even came with a poster – who IS this guy! Well, with 17 top 40 country singles and 6 top 40 country albums between 1975 and 1981, obviously they were country stars not on my Tammy Wynette-radar. The autograph collector in me, needed to get! I purchased the two albums that you see here signed by Dave and two sets of Sugars; both with Velvet Williams and one with Penny Cardin. P.S. Based on the hair tuft out of his shirts, I’m sure Dave the Bear would be very popular at The Eagle in every city. Here’s their biggest hit:
THE JETS – Eugene (from Boys Club) and his Wolfgramm brothers and sisters were The Jets – and they had quite a string of hits in the mid-to late 80’s. I’ve seen them in concert a few times; most recently in February 2022, where I had a meet and greet with the family. (I've got to find my selfie with them!) The girls still sound just like they did in the 80’s and all the family was friendly and gracious. Now, keep in mind there’s some drama and legal wrangling within The Jets, where brother Haini has broken off and formed a group of his own called The Jets Original Family Band. Shown here is one album “The Jets” signed by 7 of the Wolfgramms, which I also found in a thrift store for a couple of bucks. The 12” of “I Do You” was signed by Eddie, Kat, Moana and Elizabeth when I met them in person. When “Crush on You” and “Curiosity” came out, I was instantly fan of the girls’ sound – and I burned up the dance floor with that side-to-side mid-80’s jump move. But it was their brother, Haini, singing lead on “Rocket 2 U” that really had e going though! It’s my favorite Jets song, he was a cutie and I still love the song. Here’s a clip of Haini and the girls talking about him doing lead and then the video of the catchy tune.
THE KING COUSINS - I met Tina Cole and her sister Cathy of The King Cousins in September 2025 at the Hollwyood Show in Burbank. They were so happy to see some of the rare family pictures that I brought to them from my archives and traded me for a couple of autographs. Tina was SUPER SUPER chatty - a bright, shining, diminutive dynamo. Cathy was a bit more reserved, and picky about where to sign and on what pictures - but she was right; she has a great eye for the sweet spot next to her image. They were both genuinely lovely ladies. I told them that the first cut on Side A of their album sounds like they are on Valium and that it would be the perfect background for a killing scene in a horror film. Tina laughed and Cathy said "I never did like that arrangement" . Listen for yourself and imagine the guy with the knife lurking in your house coming up the stairs .
KRISTY & JIMMY MCNICHOL - Ohmigod I love their 70’s bubblegum pop album so, so much! I snapped it right up when I was a teenager, and it came with big fold out poster of the two of them in their silk jackets. Heaven.
I’ve met Kristy and Jimmy together and they knew off the bat that I was a true, long-time fan. Our interaction was fun and real. “Do you have this one Bobby?”, Jimmy would say and give me autographed photos for free. Kristy reached over and said, “I’ll sign that too”. It was great to see the brother and sister chemistry. Kristy was in such a great mood, talkative and sincerely connecting, as was Jimmy. He’s become quite the handsome man. BTW - “He’s a Dancer” is such a catchy disco song – it’s still on my workout playlist. I’m so cheesy, I know. Tell me this isn’t an earworm though! Here they are singing it on Dick Clark
SEQUAL – the female duo from Miami who blipped on the charts in the 80’s. I found this signed vinyl LP for $1.50 at a thrift store. My favorite song of theirs is “Tell Him I Called”, a tasty morsel by the ever-reliable Stock Aitken Waterman machine of danceable pop. I can’t find any video of them singing it, but here’s the tune I love:
THE THREE DEGREES: I have a LOT to talk about regarding my fascination with Sheila Ferguson and super-sexy 70's girl group, The Three Degrees. Their fabulous/glamorous/sexy gowns and their videos on Top of the Pops that are drool-worthy for both gay and straight men (obviously for different reasons). Separately I’ll cover the times that I’ve seen them in concert (led by Valerie) and my interaction with the girls. Tony really put my love of the Three Degrees into higher gear and we have seen two versions of the group perform (or perfume if you will) You’ll see an autographed promo 12” of “The Runner” that I found at a record store for $15 back in the day. And a video of them doing that Giorgio Moroder hit song in one of their sexy glam dresses…
WILSON PHILLIPS – June 7th, 2025 Wilson Phillips $150 at the Hollywood Show in Burbank. When I ran to catch the elevator on the way down, a mystery blonde held it open for me and it turned out that I jumped in the elevator with Chynna Phillips and her husband Billy Baldwin. Billy was on the phone and looked kind of haggard. When I met the three girls I talked to Wendy first and told her how much I loved "Impulsive". (It IS my favorite song of theirs.). She was so sweet and grateful and friendly. I told her how much I loved her mom (Marilyn Wilson from The Honeys) and asked if she was possibly going to be coming, which she said was doubtful. And then I asked how her dad, Brian Wilson, was doing and she said he was doing better. (He passed away literally 4 days later) Carnie was just as you would expect, outgoing and talkative and we discussed how much I loved her appearance on Real Housewives.. "Cake therapy" she said and mentioned that the best thing that came out of it was that she was still friends with Kyle Richards and Erika Jayne because of that appearance. So, I asked her how Kyle Richards was doing and she said she was doing well but she was surprised to hear about Tom Girardi just being sentenced to seven years in prison. Chynna was acquiescent, but slightly aloof. Somebody had left a picture of her mom and Nureyev from Valentino and asked her if her mother was coming and she said no. Although Michelle Phillips was a scheduled, guest she had a "family emergency". So I mentioned how much I love the "Valentino" movie and she said that she was on the set when she was 8 years old and that she had a thing for ballet and was so impressed about Nureyev. And then I asked how he was in person and she said he was not so nice. Both on and offset, and that her mother had slapped him at one time. We both agreed that her mother was not one to take B.S.. And then she got that far away glaze in her eyes and looked away- conversation over. Take it away, Wendy ....
