All these artists have exactly ONE original LP in their discography. This excludes compilations, 45 singles and re-packaged records with the same content as their original. I thought I’d find a lot more, right off the bat, but it’s amazing how even a poorly performing album, with not a lot (if any) chart activity has merited a 2nd album release. Perhaps, contractually, they were signed to deliver two records, minimum.
In my vast vinyl collection, I do have the ONE LP of each of these artists. Here are some quick blurbs, videos or music by some One-LP Artists
THE TOYS – The 1966 album cover of this girl group gets MAJOR points for the visuals alone! Their song, “A Lover’s Concierto” was based on a simple bit of Bach and became a top 5 hit for them on Billboard, Cashbox and in the UK.
The Toys follow-up record, riding on the coattails of their success, actually reached #18 on billboard and #36 in the UK. It’s called “Attack”. And yes, it is one. For sure.
Suzette Charles- She was crowned Miss America 1984 when original winner Vanessa Williams had to resign; nudity scandal. Suzette hand one released 12" "Free to Love Again" which reached #58 in the UK. Here she is performing at a Miss America talent competition
The Esquires - "Get on Up" - #11 Pop, #3 R&B was a favorite song from my mom's box of records
Chris Moon group with his vocals not matching his look at all! See the pretty boy with the long hair singing rock-psychedelica. He supposedly "discovered" Prince when he was 16 and co-wrote "Soft and Wet". I love the album cover; the song, not so much.
Blimes Brixton - One LP in 2019 "Castles" - Cool looking vinyl; no chart hits Video for: "Look at Me Now"
Fantastic Johnny C - Another favorite from my mom's box of records - "Boogaloo Down Broadway" (#7 Pop, #5 R&B) is still on my workout playlist and gives me a boost every time I hear it.
Little Eva made "The Locomotion" a #1 song before the remakes by Grand Funk Railroad hit #1 in 1974 and Kylie Minogue reached #1 UK, #3 US. Carole King and Gerry Goffin were lucky to have Eva as their babysitter - and Eva was lucky they asked her to record a demo. That demo of "The Locomotion" was released as-is and made them rich. Well, maybe not Eva.
Little Eva vintage clip of "The Locomotion" follow up "Let's Turkey Trot" - it reached #20 Pop, #13 UK. Note The Blossoms featuring Darlene Love in the background flapping their arms like the Funky Chicken
THIS IS The Little Eva Song that I really love - perfect girl group sound and bouncy tempo - #12 Pop, #6 R&B
"Whole Wide World" (1990) by A'me Lorain sounding like a Paula Abdul song and a Britney Spears voice - #9 Dance song
Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers singing "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" sound-alike "Baby Baby"
And Frankie singing I'm not a juvenile delinquent. No wonder he didn't need the Teenagers moving forward . You can hear why Ronnie Spector said he was her first and major inspiration.
And finally Frankie singing "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" - bye bye Teenagers, I'ma be a solo star! Well, kinda ...
This one had me burning up the dance floor in 1987 - "Pump Up the Volume" - #13 Pop, but #1 Dance, UK and in many other countries I still LOVE it! "Rhythmatic, systematic, world control"
There are no TV appearances of married couple Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich as their "studio group" The Raindrops. Their songs and this album is such good "candy". Here are two of their best!!! Love Jeff & Ellie
The Rocky Fellers sounding like The Chipmunks singing "Little Darling" in 1959. A great novelty act Filipino family and young boy lead singer.
The catchy "Killer Joe" - #16 in 1963 - is what gave the The Rocky Fellers their 15 minutes. It's a fun one!
"Please Warm My Weiner" – what an album name and cover – This song fits. For some, it gapes.
Sly Fox and their big hit - #7 Pop, #3 UK - "Let's Go All the Way"
1969 vintage color TV appearance of Spiral Starecase (sic) singing "More Today Than Yesterday" - a #12 hit that I reminded me of a Stevie Wonder song when I was a kid.
GENE BUA - Jimmy Fallon … is that you in a previous life? I bought this record simply because I never heard of this guy and he reminded me so much of Jimmy. I found him on IMDb and it turns out that he played Bill Prentiss on a soap opera, “Love of Life” from 1967-1972. Remember a time when being on a television show merited an album? Well, yes, it happened on the regular.
"I Woke Up Early the Day I Died" is a strange title - especially when it sounds like the dude is doing his best on Quaaludes. I wonder what Jimmy Fallon would do with this song?
SHIRLEY & COMPANY – The video of this amazing dance hit from 1975 says it all. There are simply no words for “& Company”. Shirley is chill but the random guy is HERE FOR IT! "Shame Shame Shame" - #1 Disco classic
The album cover with the cartoon of “Shirley” and President Nixon? Oh, the comments if that were released today! Here’s the real singer (aka & Company), Jesus Alvarez, here in a much more “restrained” performance.
THE MUSIC EXPLOSION – One of the 45’s in my mom’s box of records that I always loved as a kid and had to buy the LP as an adult. Enjoy the great intro, gritty vocal and pop-rock beat of “Little Bit of Soul” (1967) - #2 Pop
MODERN ROCKETRY – The single LP released by Modern Rocketry in 1985 contains “Homosexuality” “Love is the Drug” and a #7 Dance Hit remake of The Monkee’s "I'm Not Your Steppin Stone". My copy is sealed on San Francisco’s Megatone records proudly “Pressed On Virgin Vinyl”. They don't have much video footage. This version of homosexuality is an interesting time capsule of what gays were doing and looked like in 1985.
ROBEY – A pretty girl on the cover of 12 inch singles?!?! I’m all over it. I bought Robey’s records before I even knew who she was, or that she actually had a #3 Dance Hit with “One Night in Bangkok”. Something about looking like a cross between Paulina Porizkova and Jodie Comer with 80’s hair simply does it for me. AND she starred in “Friday the 13th: The Series”. What?!
With over 20,000 pieces of vinyl in my collection, I'm sure I'll be adding more to this page. I love doing the research on discographies and chart positions. Tony V. - I know you know ... rabbit holes!
