"Enjoy this trip. Enjoy this trip. And it is a trip. Countdown is progressing." - Theme from S'Express
Come.. take my hand and let me show you how I run down the rabbit holes in my collection. This rabbit hole is more like a ball of rubber bands that I need to untangle because "The Roxanne Wars" is a mind-blowing complex interaction across several artists and several years. I think I got SOME of the facts right, but I'll be back later to untangle this mess ...
I come across my 12-in single of UTFO singing Roxanne and then I realize I have multiple 12-in singles by Roxanne. But wait there's more than one Roxanne because of the "Roxanne Wars" that came about after UTFO released their song and there was a bunch of answer singles. Which is why I had Roxanne Shante filed incorrectly with the Real Roxanne. Here's the video/song that started it all
Ok - so there's Elease Jack who recorded "The Real Roxanne" with UTFO, but then Adelaida Martinez took over the stage name to become "The Real Roxanne"
Then Roxanne Shante answered back with "Roxanne's Revenge"
Answer records in the dozens followed! First off, UTFO answered BACK to "Roxanne's Revenge" (no video released for this one) with "The Real Roxanne"
Then "The Real Roxanne" had a hit with:
Anyway … so then Sparky D got in the mix with HER diss on Roxanne Shante
Sparky D(ee) later released that track on her and Shante’s “Round 1” album and she had a few other singles. And you might want to check her Instagram, cuz she’s … ummm … got a few things to say now and then.
I liked Roxanne Shante’s “Bad Sister” album cuz it had a fun cheery single along with a revenge single
And then it struck me that Roxanne Shante and Sparky D AND The Real Roxanne - had all been dissed on “Anotha Ho” – by J.J. Fad on their very first release … which was the A-side of their first release of Supersonic – but was excluded from their album
I really had no idea there was this ongoing female rapper feud. J.J. Fad later called out Roxanne Shante as a lesbian during a less fluid time in history on "We Want It All" written and produced by Eazy E with these lyrics:
"And Shanté, ya' nasty fat nasty, album didn't sale 'cause you ain't got no class, bitch
You just rudy-pooh sucka, and homegirl, stop screwin' each other, yo
You know you don't like brothers, maybe juicy got em' crazy but it smell like the gutter"
No, they di'int! Oh, yes, they did. Before my research and understanding of the “feuds”, J.J. Fad was just one of my favorite girl groups of the '80s and I just thought they were "clean cut supersonic motivating rhymers of the 80s"! To be honest it's because I don't think that I fully listened to the lyrics of their first released 12” single ARE their follow-up album “Not Just a Fad” which didn't have any chartered hits. So I initially missed the Roxanne Shante dis. Clueless about female rapper wars.
One thing leads to another may be a song by The Fixx, but it is exactly what happens to me when I start doing research or simply pull a record off the shelf.
As you can see I have just about everything from the J.J. Fad discography and quite a few pieces from the others mentioned above. The interconnections in my collection are endless.
Way out way out ....
